A fine football club, playing in Germany's Bundesliga for over a decade. Nothing special about it, other than the fact that the club represents a village with 3,191 residents. OK, now, the village sits in a municipality with a population of 35,707. So how the hell can a legitimate football club operate is such an environment? The answer lies with one person alone.
Dietmar Hopp grew up in the village of Hoffenheim. In early 1970's, after leaving IBM, he has co-founded computer conglomerate SAP. Oh, and Hopp played in Hoffenheim's youth system and he loves football. So, by 2000 he started backing up his boyhood club financially.
By the time, Hoffenheim was playing amateur football in Germany's 5th division. After the 2000-01 season, the club was promoted to 4th division and after a single seazson, to 3rd division. Not good enough for hopp. During that period, the club was managed for 5 seasons by one, Hansi Flick, future manager of Germany's national team.
By 2006-07, the club hired Ralf Rangnick as a manager and gave him a five-year contract. It took just one season for Hoffenheim to get promoted to 2Bundesliga and one season more to go step up to the Bundesliga. It has remained there ever since.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was established in 1899 as a gymnastics club. By 1945, the club was merged with Fußballverein Hoffenheim and Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft 1899 Hoffenheim, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for short, was born. There are no special honors to mention, other than 2 special occasions: the 2000 acquisition by Hoop and the 2008-09 promotion to the Bundesliga. Well, there is another one here: Due to a 3rd place finish in 2017-18, Heffenheim played Champions League football the season that followed and the one after.
Croat Andrej Kramaric is Hoffenheim's top goal scorer of all times, scoring 122 goals in 238 appearances starting with 2016 and counting.
Hoffenheim play its home matches in beautiful, 30,150-seat PreZero Arena, formally Rhein-Neckar-Arena, built to the tone of 100 million Euros provided by Hopp once the club was on its way to the Bundesliga. During its lower-divisions days, the club used to play in 6,350-seat Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion.
