The number 6, 5 and 4 jumps right out. That’s 6, 5 and 4 as in divisions. Spanish league lower divisions, that is. And that is exactly where Leganes spent most of its seasons since being founded in 1928.
It wasn’t until 1954 that the club got itself promoted to Division 3, where it spent 6 seasons before being relegated to a place it was more familiar with, Division 4. And it wasn’t until 1993-94 that Leganes was promoted to Division 2, or La Liga 2, where it spent 11 seasons, and back again to Division 3.
By the time the 2013-14 has arrived, something strange happened: Leganes started a rapid climb, that took it all the way to the top, to the pinnacle of Spanish football. The team spent just 2 seasons in Segunda Division and in time for the 2016-17 season, it has found itself in an unfamiliar territory, in La Liga, but stayed there ever since.
Leganes is a small city (population 186,000) in central Spain, on the outskirts of Madrid, and that is where Club Deportivo Leganés, S.A.D was founded in 1928. It wasn’t until the 90’s that Leganes has started making waves, reaching Spain’s 2nd Division. During that time, the team had a certain striker, one, Samuel Eto'o. The Cameroonian was a part of the Real Madrid academy and was sent to train for Real Madrid Castilla, that was relegated to 3rd Division, so he was loaned to Leganes for the 1997-98 season but managed to score only four times in 30 appearances.
Leganes reached the latter stages of the 2015-16 season close to the top of the Segunda Division, but the team needed a last-match victory over Club Deportivo Mirandés, after a goal by Pablo Insua to seal the dream promotion to La Liga. Amazingly enough, it had stayed there for three seasons running.
As a team from a city in close proximity to Madrid, Leganes’ fiercest rivalry is with Getafe and the matches between the two are known as the South Madrid Derby.
Leganes play its home matches in Butarque Municipal Stadium, that has a capacity of 11,454 seats.
