No one have anticipated it and no one saw it coming. After all, Eintracht Frankfurt have bounced between the Bundesliga and 2Bundesliga in the last decade, not really leaving a mark on the German and European football. But as the 2020-21 season progressed, the club just kept advancing in the UEFA Europa League stages, until that day in Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville. By the end of the evening, Eintracht lifted the European cup.
22 years have passed since Eintracht Frankfurt last knew European glory, after defeating fellow German Borussia Monchengladbach in the final of the 1980 EUFA Cup. In 2022, Eintracht finished in a 1-1 draw with Glasgow Rangers after extra time, before a 5-4 win in penalties sent Frankfurters for a long night of celebrations.
Eintracht Frankfurt is derived from two Frankfurt clubs founded in 1899 who merged in May 1911. Always performing well in the regional competitions that pre-dated the establishment of the Bundesliga, they took the German national title in 1959 which they followed up by an exciting run in the 1960 European Cup where they lost to Real Madrid in a ten goal thriller, regarded by many as one of the greatest football matches of all times. The final margin of defeat was 3-7 with Alfredo Di Stefano scoring a hat trick for Real with their other four goals being scored by Puskas.
This kind of form earned Eintracht an invitation to participate along with 15 other clubs in the initial season of the Bundesliga in 1963 and the club have remained for no fewer than 33 seasons in the top division. Five times runner up, once being only two points light of the eventual champions, Eintracht also flirted with relegation, twice avoiding it only with playoff victories and eventually their lucky spell came to an end. However, the 1996-97 season saw them relegated to the 2Bundesliga accompanied by 1. FC Kaiserslautern, two of only four that had been in the Bundesliga since the inaugural season.
Several players who represented Germany in winning World Cup teams were picked whilst playing for Eintracht. These included Alfred Pfaff (1954), Jürgen Grabowski and Bernd Hölzenbein (1974) and Uwe Bein (1990). In addition, two players received Olympic gold medals while playing for Frankfurth: Jay-Jay Okocha winning gold for Nigeria in 1996 and Ralf Sievers winning bronze for Germany in 1988.
