That was among talk of him being not so happy with a team the wasn’t able to put a good enough supporting cast around him.
Well, he delivered. In 2020-21, the Greek Freak did what everyone expected of him to do, even-though some said he wasn’t good enough, tough enough, to do – carry his team almost singled-handedly to the promised land.
Giannis Antetokounmpo did it the right way, by leading the Bucks in scoring, rebounds and field goals. He did it by winning MVP awards both for the regular season and the finals. He did it the old-fashioned way, just like another all-time Milwaukee great did exactly 50 years earlier, in 1971, just like Lew Alcindor, before announcing he has changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Milwaukee Bucks was founded in 1968 as an expansion team. By winning the 1971 title, the team became the fastest in NBA history to win the crown just three years after first beginning to play. Alcinder was assisted by two more NBA Hall of Fame: Bobby Dandridge, – who averaged 18.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, while converting 50.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and the “Big O”, Oscar Robertson, who joined the team a year after Abdul-Jabbar. The team was back in the NBA finals in 1974 but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Following the trade that sent Abdul-Jabbar to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for four players, the Bucks have fallen on hard time, but have recouped quick enough, by naming Hall of Fame Don Nelson as coach in 1978. Nelson became the first coach to implement the small ball philosophy, rotating three centers and relaying on high pressure, fastbreak games, with an arsenal full of quick and intelligent guards such as Junior Bridgeman, Marques Johnson, Paul Pressey, Craig Hodges and forward Terry Cummings. Above all, the team was led by All-star Sidney Moncrief and dominated the Central division 7 times. However, the emphasize at the time in the league was on a dominating center, someone the Bucks always lack. Nelson’s teams made the play-off for over a decade, but failed to win the Eastern conference and never made it to the finals.
This day’s Milwaukee has a very able supporting cast around Antetokounmpo: guards Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague, forward Khris Middleton and center Brook Lopez. And there is another Antetokounmpo in the roaster – brother Thanasis.
