О нас Питер Гэбриэл
Peter Gabriel is one of the most unique, ground-breaking, voices of rock'n'roll in general and progressive rock in particular, with a long, varied and incredibly distinguished career that spans the better part of the last 50 years. And yet, it took wearing a woman's dress and a fox's head for him, and his band at the time, Genesis, the get world's attention.
Genesis was formed by Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford in 1967. The band's music lied heavily on Gabriel's vocals and song-writing ability. After a first album, "From Genesis to Revelation" (1968) got little attention, the band dissembled, only for the school friends to decide to return to music on a full-time basis. A second album followed "Trespass" (1970) didn't pan much better, causing Phillips and the band's drummer at the time to decide to leave. Through ads in the music paper "Melody Maker", the band recruited guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins. The stage was set.
The band's third album "Nursery Cryme" (1971) was where it all came together and announced the arrival of one of the most important bands in progressive rock. Genesis was suddenly the hot ticket. And yet, band members felt that they were still not getting proper recognition, as Britian's music scene was humming. It all changed during a show in 1972, as Gabriel left the stage, only to return a few minutes later, wearing a red dress and a fox's head. His band mates were not really surprised for the vocalist's extravagant behavior, but they were not prepared either. "I wish he had informed us prior, so we would have been ready for this", recalled Collins later.
It turned out that a red dress and a fox's head was all it took. Genesis received plenty of recognition and accolades and it never looked back. Three more studio albums – "Selling England by the Pound", "Foxtrot" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" – followed, all of them best sellers, followed by world tours. Genesis became one of the most innovative, important bands of the progressive rock area.
At the height of their success, as relations between band member knew ups and downs, especially downs, Gabriel decided to quit Genesis.
Gabriel was successful in his solo career, with singles as "Games Without Frontiers" and "Shock the Monkey" from his earlier albums. He was also one of the most fresh and ground-breaking artists when it came to music videos. His fourth album, "So", went to number 1 in the charts, with single such as "Sledgehammer", "Red Rain", "Big Time" and "Don't Give Up", which was a duet with Kate Bush.
Over the years, Gabriel has been one of music's most influential activists, especially with concern over human rights and minorities. He was never afraid to voice his political views.
Gabriel has won six Grammy awards, three Brit Awards and multiple MTV Video and Music Awards. He was inducted into Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis and as a solo artist.
